Movies for the Fashion Brained (22/32)

Below is a list of all of the films I believe any fashion loving person should consume. 1-12 are movies I have watched, studied and loved in order from most watched/influential to me to lesser so but still very much inspiring. The additional 5 documentaries are ones I have yet to see but plan on bingeing on in the very near future. I narrowed this list down to just biography’s/documentary films. 

  1. Unzipped (1995)

  2. My favorite fashion film follows Isaac Mizrahi as he designs his Fall Womenswear 1994 collection. It’s primarily in black and white only breaking into color to give you a glimpse at his colorful collection. Packed with New York Fashion Icons and Supermodels the energy is palpable.

  3. McQueen And I (2011)

  4. A documentary recounting the life, success, and destruction of Alexander McQueen told through the individuals that were closest to him. Shows and breaks down some of his most controversial collections!

  5. Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer (2015)

  6. Telling the story of how Jeremy got his start and following him as he designs his second collection for Moschino. Fall Womenswear 2014

  1. Tom Ford (2009)

  2. Following the designer as he developed his debut womenswear collection for Tom Ford.

  3. Saint Laurent  (2014)

  4. A french bio-pic centered around the peak of Laurent’s career, between 1967-1976. (This is the only film on the list that is not a documentary)

  5. Bill Cunningham New York (2010)

  6. Profiles veteran New York fashion photographer Bill Cunningham as he rides his bike through the streets of New York tirelessly looking for and capturing fashion moments.

  7. Catwalk (1995)

  8. Similar in tone to 1995’s Unzipped this documentary captured the energy and life of a Super Model in the early 1900’s. By Following Christy Turlington through the spring fashion shows in Milan, Paris, and New York.

  1. September Issue (2009)

  2. Chronicles the making of 2007’s September Issue of Vogue.

  3. Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008)

  4. Tells the story of Valentino’s career as he prepares for retirement after 50 years in fashion.

  5. Iris (2014)

  6. A look into the life of fashion icon Iris Apfel as she goes thru and let’s go of priceless pieces she has collected over the years. As well as showing her involvement in current projects such as Bergdorf’s windows inspired by Iris herself.

  7. Dior and I (2014)

  8. Behind the scenes look at the house of Dior as Raf Simons designs his first collection for the house. Fall Couture 2012 The show at the end is stunning!!

  9. Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf’s (2013)

  10. A series of interviews with designers, fashion icons and professionals discussing the history of and their personal relationship with manhattan department store Bergdorf Goodman.

  9. Diana Veerland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011)

  10. Diana Vreeland, Harpers Bazaar

Let me know if you too enjoy any of these fashionable films. As well as recommending anything I may have forgotten or have yet to see. It is very inspiring to me to see how successful people have gotten to where they are today as well as seeing beautiful, artistic pieces so I’m always on the look out for fashion doc’s such as these.
